Economy of Jagatsinghpur
Jagatsinghpur is known for its rich cultural heritage but this district has a relatively low demographic profile as compared to other places in the state. It was formed after the division of Cuttack which was subdivided into 8 tehsils that included Tirtol, Kujang, Balikuda, Naugaon, Biridi, Ersamaand Raghunathpur. The district is yet in its development stages and even though a majority of the population belongs to the agricultural sector, infrastructure wise they seem to be developed in regards to drinking water, Electricity, Education and Health facilities.
As stated earlier, the livelihood and economy of this district are mainly agricultural based and irrigation is a very important factor in the development of this sector. There are rivers, canals, ponds, tanks and ground water sources that serve as the major components in the development of agriculture.
Agrarian Economy in Jagatsinghpur
A large portion of this district belongs to the rural sector with agriculture being the basic source of livelihood and income generation for the people living here. Most of the agricultural activities include cultivation of food crops, oil seeds, horticultural crops, animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries etc. Betel vine, cashew, coconut, kewra and rice are a few of the main crops that are grown for the local economy.
The agricultural sector has a major chance to grow and developed as they have the necessary facilities. They have a huge amount of surface water acquired through rivers and canals as well as abundant ground water for cultivation of variety of agricultural and horticultural products, which in turn adds to their advantage. Every year the district sees a growth in agriculture by 5%. You can be sure to see an increase in growth within the coming years as there will be better management of agricultural and other natural resources such as land, water, human resources etc.
